About Us

The Liverpool Clan Wallace Pipe Band was initially founded in 1949, named the Balmoral Pipe Band, by men returning to Liverpool after WW2 where they had served with various Scottish regiments and had either learnt to play or just developed a love for bagpipe music. In a short time the name was changed to the Victory Pipe Band until the present name was adopted in August 1979 because it fully describes the band; we are from Liverpool and we wear the Wallace tartan.

Why do we wear Wallace? Well back in 1949 it was decided that we should wear Royal Stewart so members of the band went to the tartan shop we had here in Liverpool, at the time, called Harford’s to buy the cloth for the kilts. Tragedy! No Royal Stewart in stock only red wallace. Hasty glances were exchanged between the band members which resulted in “ok we’ll have that”. And that’s the reason why we wear it to this day. Local bands refer to us as “The Wallace”

Over the years we have had pipers and drummers join the armed forces including  the Black Watch, Royal Highland Fusiliers, Highlanders, Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Army Medical Corps, Scots Guards and the Royal Air Force.

The band has both men and women players ranging in age from our youngest who is 10 to a number of members who are in their seventies. We’ve played at a variety of venues as a band namely the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall for the British Heart Foundation, the Empire Theatre, the Epstein Theatre with The Mersey Beatles .We led the parade of Giants along the Liverpool waterfront in 2014 on their farewell to Liverpool and every two years we have a band weekend in Belgium to play at the WW1 memorial, the Menin Gate, in Ypres. Next year it will be our ninth time. Over the years we have played at some of  the many cemeteries such as Tyne Cot, Thiepval Brandhoek and Arnhem and for the first time in 2017 we paid our respects at Dunkirk. We recently performed with  the Andre Rieu orchestra at the Liverpool M&S Arena which was a repeat for some of our band members who performed in Manchester in 2013.

The band is led by Pipe Major Robbie Blackmore who has been a band member since 1971 and Pipe Major since 1994 following an earlier stint in the '70's.

This year sees us celebrate 75 years since the band's formation and we look forward to delighting audiences for many more years to come.
